INTERVIEW
WITH THE PRESIDENT OF CHRISTIAN POLITICAL FORUM MR. MARK WILLIAM LEWIS. During the year 1999 leaders of various walks belonging to 14 Parishes/church situated in the area of Brahmavar constituency came together to form a Forum by name "Christian Political Forum" . The main purpose of this movement is to have better contact with the politicians and to mobilize the people for better understanding and to support the secular candidates during various local elections. Mr. Mark William Lewis, Matpady, Barhmavar as its founder president the forum has successfully completed the first tenure of 3 years and is re-elected for the second term. We are happy to publish a exclusive interview of Mr. Lewis , by our team member Mr. Lancer Fernandes.
Lancer : While congratulating you for having elected as the President of this movement for the 2nd term of 3 years, we wish to know about the developments, which prompted you for having thought of starting such a movement. Lewis
: During the year 1998, there were lot of atrocities being committed
against the religious leaders in Orissa, Bihar etc and we had organised
lot of protest rallies. Then the leaders of Barkur and Brahmavar met and
planned for starting a movement which will help the people of different
walk come together and also to have better understanding with the local
politicians, we asked the like minded people of 14 parishes and
organised a meeting at Swarna Bhavan, Brahmavar which was the starting
step for such a movement. The political forum was inaugurated on 26th
December 1998. Lancer
: Can give brief
about the area in which you are marching forward and your role in the
elections, which were held after 1999. Lewis
: In fact, even though our name includes "politics" we have
limited role in politics. That is, we are not directly involving
ourselves in any of the political party. We have members belonging to
different political parties. During the elections we support the secular
candidates and see that better leaders are elected. We are happy that
now the political parties and their leaders want good relationship with
us. We require this for assisting the poor and needy people. Many times
we have gone to the Police Station, Govt. offices etc. along with the
people who are being let down. About
the elections, which were held after 1999, we have supported the secular
candidates and we are happy that many of them have been elected, are
serving the society. Lancer : After
completing the tenure of 3 years as president and being elected for the
next period of 3 more years, will you please explain your
feelings? Lewis
:
I am really happy on this occasion. Even though we could not achieve
more we are confident of getting the support from the people. People
have accepted the movement and are approaching us for various problems
faced by them. We have representatives from all 14 parishes and have
close contact with the members. Lancer
:
Can you please
explain us the future plannings and involving different
groups/walks of people. Lewis
: We are contacting the leaders from Kundapur, Udupi and Shirva and we
want to establish such units so that we can have more influence in the
society. Regarding involving youth I am meeting the leaders of
Kallianpur Varado youth Council and through them I am confident of
getting the involvement of other varado youth leaders. Lancer:
