Q n A Part 6  Philip Richard and John GonsalveS

We, on behalf  of my Mamma, Elder Brother Archie, Sisters Ivy & Doris also their family members, sincerely acknowledge with humility your kind words of consolation, which were of great strength to accept the sad and sudden demise of our loving Pappa on 25th June, 2009.

We are grateful to our Parish Priest Rev. Fr. R.C.M.Aranaha, who always stood by us at all times and kind to perform all holy religious sacraments to prepare well to our papa for his last journey and thereafter funeral service and Holy Mass on 27th June 09.

A word of thanks deservedly goes to Dr. Sunil who was attending him since 5 long years. At this point of time, I recall the services of our Mr. Herald D’Souza, Vice President of Parish Council, other Church organizations, Nagermut ward-in-charge, Mrs. Zita Fernandes and her team of dedicated volunteers, our neighbors, present and Ex-members of SPA, CYM & AYA, our friends and relatives, my colleagues at SMS College, all our near and dear ones, who phoned, sent telegrams, messages of condolences, offered wreaths & flowers…..etc and most importantly found time to attend the funeral service, visited our home to pay your respects, although its very difficult path and prayed for papa’s eternal peace in heaven…..

No words of thanks suit to acknowledge your generosity, goodwill and help but in word say ‘Thank you very much’.

Pappa lived a long life of 83 years, and about to celebrate 50 years of married life, that too 100% together on 18/05/2010, Almighty’s plans are different for each one of us and one have to accept the same….

We also remain indebted to the host & team of Barkur-on-line pages and Daijiworld, Kannada daily Udayavani for allocating their valuable space and time for Pappa, in their columns…..

Thanks once again……….

Jude Alfred Furtado, Lecturer, SMS College , Brahmmavar,01/06/2009

Hi Archie

My condolences to you and to the Furtado family. We all have to lose our parents. Some lose early, some lose late.  Losing a parent is inevitable. You can bear the loss, perhaps at much less sorrow, for your Dad had quite a life of 83 years. Yes, Archie, may God grant strength to bear the loss, and may your father's soul rest in peace.

Well said Wilfred Maxim D''Souza, from KULSHEKAR, "enthusiastic and wise talents which have been hiding in poor villages." Thanks to those recent benevolent hands who helped them shine by lifting the bushel lids instead of yanking them down in the crab baskets. The Railway Tunnel works at KULSHEKAR was undertaken by a Resident of this ''poor village'' Barkur, 65 years ago!

Vipers can fly too, besides, swimming and crawling.

Thanks to cell phones and their ability for memory storage. Thanks to full tank automobiles and safe non-sleepy owner drivers, even at midnight. Thanks to non-pothole roads and highways, and newly built or timely repaired bridges around Barkur. Thanks to a modern hospital even though 25 miles away at Manipal, built 50 years ago, by neighborhood visionaries.

A man in Kudru (name withheld) was bitten by a water viper while night fishing. Fortunately he was carrying his cell phone.   Fortunately a D’souza in Nagarmutt picked up this frantic call.   From Nagarmutt, via Barkur-Matpady bridge, via Brahmavar, via Mabukal bridge, via Sastan, via Moodahadu Kudru bridge, using the newly laid Dr. Gabriel Fernandes Road which made it easier and closer to victim, this D’Souza drove his VAN, without looking at the speedometer, reached this Viper bitten semiconscious person, dragged him in his van, and dashed or I should say flew to Manipal hospital at about 12:30 midnight.  Fortunately, there were no cops/police at night, and the traffic was light.

Presently, this person is fine they say, the leg wound is being healed, may take a while and the scar may never heal. Viper venom is corrosive thus slow to heal, provided treated within a short period of viper bite, as in this case.

No, I am not going to say anything more nagging, except, that I want a three seat copter, which does not need bridges or roads and can land on trees! Is water Viper called “Huli Kandody”?  What an irony to my last message ‘Huli the Tiger?’

I am not a soothsayer. God does not send an e-mail saying, “I am sending rain tomorrow.”  But he sends signals such as clouds, lightening, thunder, and strong winds.  Obviously we keep our umbrellas ready without our mothers telling us. Can we learn from this rain phenomena? Even in Chicago STOP signs are placed after a couple of deadly accidents, but not before the deaths take place.  But Barkur is smarter!

Let me repeat the whole purpose of this news item is to tell the readers that investing in infrastructures helps the public and ourselves to save time, adds to comforts and conveniences, and moreover saves lives.

Thanks to Alwyn and Kishoo for pushing to complete the road in a short time by gathering the support of the local people. Dr. Gabriel what next? What’s happening to the Kudru-Bennekudru bridge?

Happy Birthday

Can you believe a sparrow carrying a filtered cigarette butt to its nest and setting a whole shop on fire?  True indeed.

A shop suffered £250,000 damage to its roof after a sparrow carried a lit cigarette butt back to its nest.  Last Updated: 2:06PM BST 22 Apr 2009.  Fire fighters were called to tackle the blaze in Crescent Stores in Leasingham, Lincs, after the fire gutted the upstairs flat above the shop and reduced the roof to cinders.  Insurance investigators confirmed the blaze was started by a sparrow which stashed a lit cigarette under the eaves of the detached shop.

Investigators found 35 cigarette ends in other nests under the eaves.

I do remember such weaver bird nests (as above,) just above the house I was born in Moodahadu village.

It’s a good thing I was not smoking those days. Could not afford anyway!  Can you imagine that if a sparrow or a weaver bird were to pick up a just discarded filtered cigarette butt to make soft cushion to its eggs, and since the butt was not fully extinguished, if it were to set fire to that nest, and if the burning nest was to fall on my then thatched house roof, the whole house would have been on fire!  The nearest fire station was 60 miles away, as far as I knew then.

If my house were to be on fire, do you know how many of God’s creatures would have been on the foot paths or in the fields?  For example all my roommates like:

Tiny ants, red ants, cockroaches (used in catching turtles), bed-bugs, house flies, milli or centipedes, earth worms, roof snakes, lizards, birds like sparrows (building nests behind the saints picture frames in the living room), running around squirrels, rats, mice, cats, dogs, chicken, cows, buffaloes, frogs, (used in catching crabs) crickets, moths, and panpalle or sanna maas guests, and sneaking crows?

Did you share your house this way?  Be honest!

I do remember sparrows.  No one complained except me, because, I was the one who had to sweep the mess these birds made.
