ICYM Barkur, Silver Jubilee, The grand finale…

It was a glittering finale to the three days of ICYM Barkur Silver Jubilee Celebrations coincided with the Christmas , and the organizers had no stones unturned to see that the spirit of 25 years was still glowing , and it was evident by the houseful participation of people from and around Barkur , as the ground of St. Peter’s Church was packed with enthusiasm and fervor.

The distinguished guests of the evening, Shri Vinaya Kumar Sorake, M.P., Rev. Fr. Vincent Montherio, Director, Pastoral Institute , Mangalore Diocese, Mr. Peter Furtado, Vice president , SPA (Barkur) Mumbai, Mr. Ivan Rebello, Secretary, SPA and the newly elected President of ICYM Ex- Members Association, Mr. Shantharam Shetty, Mrs. Bharathi Kamath, President , Barkur Panchayth, Mr. Staney Pais, President , Rotary Barkur, Mr. Udayachandra Shetty, Brahmavar Block Congress President, Mr. Archibald Furtado were lead to the stage by Rev. Fr. Sylvester D’Souza, Mr. Herald D’Souza, President, SJC, Mr. Gerald Gonsalves , Vice president of the Parish Council and also the Vice President of ICYM Ex-Members Association, Ms. Divya Furtado and Mr. Kishore Gonsalves.

Mr. Ivan Rebello, introduced and welcomed the esteemed guests , followed by the Prize Distributions. The winners of the Inter Parish Cultural and Sports events were felicitated and presented with trophies and shields , by the ever enterprising Mr. Peter Furtado. In his address Mr. Furtado requested the M.P. to promote modern education at Dakshina Kannada.

Rev. Fr. Vincent Montherio on behalf of ICYM, Barkur, felicitated Mr. Udayachandra Shetty and Mr. Staney Pais.

Mr. Vinaya Kumar Sorake, in the presence of Editor In Chief Mr. Archibald Furtado, and the Editor In Charge Mr.Eric Soans, symbolically unveiled the commemorative souvenir of the silver jubilee celebrations.

Mr. Patrick D’Almeida, Electrician, Mr. Wilfred Andrade of Shanthi Shamiyana , Mr. Bernard J. D’Costa, writer of the play “Povithr Dole” and Mr. Peter D’Souza, outstanding personality from ICYM Barkur unit were presented with mementos by Mr. Shantharam Shetty, the popular figure and the prominent businessman from Barkur. Mr. Shetty later in his address  congratulated the youth of Barkur for keeping the unit alive and kicking for 25 years of tireless service to the society.

Mr. Archibald Furatdo briefed the public about the newly formed ICYM Ex-members Association , which is the first of its kind in the whole of Mangalore Diocese. The association was formally inaugurated by Mr. Ivan Rebello, The founder president, Mr. Sorake, Ms. Bharathi Kamath, Fr. Montherio, Mr. Furtado , who lit the wicks of the traditional lamp. Later the newly elected office bearers of the association were incepted by pinning the badges.

Mrs. Stella D’Souza Memorial Medical Relief Fund , founded by Dr. Derrick D’Souza, M.B.B.S., M.D., FRCS, residing at UK, an ex-member of ICYM Barkur, to be operated by ICYM Barkur Unit was announced as a part of the Silver Jubilee Project.

The main sponsors of the mega Wilfy Nite, Dr. Derrick , D’Souza, Mr. Wilson Furtado, Bangalore, Mr. Jossie Pinto, Nanthoor ,Mangalore, and Mr. Steven Fernandes , Brahmavar of the Oxford Industries , and the sponsors of Inter Parish Cultural Competitions , the Souza Brothers of Australia, Mr. Claude, Mr. Canute and Mr. Solomon D’Souza were honored. Mr. Michael D’Souza, brother of Dr. Derrick, and Mr., William Furatdo, father of Mr. Wilson Furatdo ,accepted the honors on their behalf from Fr. Montherio and Mr. Sorake .

Mr. Herald D’Souza, President, SJC, Former Diocesan Youth Council President, and currently the Sachethak of the ICYM was honored for his selfless and dedicated service from the launching of the Silver Jubilee year to the grand finale, along with his wife Mrs. Shaila D’Souza. The D’Souza couple were presented with traditional shawl, garlands and the memento, by Mrs. And Mr. Ivan Rebello.

The Konkann Kogull, Wilfy Rebimbus and Konkann maina Mrs. Meena Rebimbus were honored . Mr. Kishore Gonzales, Secretary, SJC, read the poetically composed Mann Pothr and the couple were presented with the traditional shawl, garlands, and the memento. Rev. Fr. Vincent Montherio did the honors.

Mr. Vinaya Kumar Sorake spoke on the occasion, and announced the much awaited ring road project , connecting the Kacchur- Halekody villages, which was a prominent subject of discussion at our website , few days ago. He also announced Rs. 50,000 for the development of public crematorium for Barkur from his MP’s grant ,amidst a roaring applause from the audience.

Rev. Fr. Vincent Montherio , delivered the presidential address , and remembered the three days Decennial Celebrations of the ICYM Barkur, back in 1986, for which he was present as the Director the Diocesan Youth Council, and praised the Barkur ICYM unit and the Ex-members for keeping the  fire burning all through the 25 years of its fruitful existence in the service of the humanity.

Rev. Fr. Sylvester D’Souza gave a brief Christmas message to the gathering.  Ms. Patricia D’ Almeida, the joint Secretary of the ICYM EX-Members Association gave the vote of thanks. The stage programme was immaculately compeered by Mr. Eric Soans, with his chaste language kept the audience well informed about the proceedings of the evening.

The stage was set for the topmost entertainment in konkanni, the Grand Wilfy Nite. The troupe held the audience and the ardent music fans glued to their seats and spectators reciprocated  to the group after each and every song or event that was presented. The Konkann kogull and Maina , along with Vishwas and Veena held the jampacked 2500 and odd spectators, spellbound with their melodious rendering of the soulful lyrics set to heart soothing tunes. The scene stealer of the evening was Vishwas Rebimbus with his beautiful presentation of Koangaai, koangaai thi choli  along with synchronized dancing by the famous dance troupe Ocaen Kids.

The short comedy skits from the one and only Dolla and his gang of jokers were hilarious and had the spectators roaring in laughter. The Wilfy Nite presented for the first time in the history of Barkur , as the crowning glory of the ICYM Silver Jubilee Celebrations , was truly a spectacular event , to be cherished a long time, was a fitting finale of the 3 days mega celebrations, kept the audience asking for more.
