The need of an

ASSOCIATION OF EX-MEMBERS OF-- ICYM --  CATHOLIC YOUTH MOVEMENT, -- BARKUR

Few developments took place during  the last week, at our Barkur, once again prompted me to pen our opinions, on behalf of ex members co-ordination committee, on the need of one official platform, of EX-CYM MEMBERS, to protect, promote and safeguard our interests in general.

More than ever before, the time has come, dear friends, who associated with this CYM,  to think seriously and plan out something, to voice our concern, -  jointly, forcefully and authoritatively -  with dual objective of supporting the Church and the parish on the one hand  and on the other to  pool the resources of ex-members and right thinking people, with an aim to promote the welfare of Youth and Children of Barkur.

Based on various letters received from few well-wishers like you, we hereby strongly recommend, the immediate installation of such an organisation, as a meaningful memorial to its ‘Silver Jubilee Celebrations’ – a grand platform for human resources development.

Inviting you to come out with your suggestions and guidelines, we  would like to write these few lines, for your consideration:

Un-officially the very concept of, having Decennial Celebrations in the year 1986 and now the preparations for the Silver Jubilee, in 2002, is the out-come of an amicable relationship between the present and the past members then and now. (I must not be wrong to state here that the then SPCYA of Bombay, was de-facto organisation of one time CYM members only.) To continue this spirit of co-operation and mutual respect, in coming years not restricting only to certain occasions, with the following ideals and objectives, the Ex-Members Co-ordination Committee, feel it appropriate, to form an Association of past members.

With a primary responsibility of playing the role of a well-wisher, guide, advisor, moral and monetary supporter to the present members of ICYM, these few objectives also will be incorporated in its charter.

1] To develop an atmosphere of friendship:  CYM is the common thread unite around 400 odd people - Could it be possible for anyone to have such a long list of friends ranging 25 long years, almost a generation, that too from one small town!

2] Personal Development and Progress:  The very idea of securing membership of CYM is to grow ourselves in a community.

3] Scope for business progress:  Particularly, those engaged in service industries, like Banking, Insurance and Trade and Commerce, to be associated in such units will have a definite advantage to expand further.

4] Leadership qualities can further exposed and developed: There are good number of ex-members, who didn’t get an opportunity to serve as its President / Secretary etc, or to lead during their days in the CYM, due to various reasons, can utilise this chance to realise their un-fulfilled dreams, in the service of the community, now.

[It is also proposed, that the leadership of this Association will be given to them who voluntarily come forward, in case no-one do so, names will be nominated and as far as possible election politics will be avoided. As a goodwill gesture, all those members served as Presidents and Gen. Secretaries in the past, constitute the ‘elite group of Advisors,’ and their names will also be considered for leadership, but with a preference to others, if situation demands.]

5] Can serve as a platform to exhibit one’s talents. There are good numbers of youngsters

from  Barkur, gifted with rich talents serving and living in Barkur, as well as outside towns and cities and abroad, can be  given an opportunity while they are on holidays.

6]  ‘Family Forum’- like Lions Club, Rotary Club, this unit, may also organise at least get-to-gathers – Ex-members day - twice in a year say May and Dec with their families.

7] Spouse of ex-members also can be an active member of this set-up.

8] An mechanism will be worked out, to include well-wishers of this group, say those who missed the chance to enrol as members of CYM during their heydays – now given room to become ‘co-opted members’. [Few talented friends, working women approached us,  especially from newly settled families in Barkur, to this effect - who earlier served in platforms like this, in other parishes]

9] As a group, it can sponsor, Cultural and Educational Programmes, small and big  – eg.  Kavi-ghosti, Seminars, Training Camps etc for the benefit of self and public.

10] Social progress: In general all CYM members are treated with high respect in our parish. In other words, though, all of us try our best, to  preserve that, this forum also gives an opportunity to work for the betterment of  the Society..

11] To feel proud, honoured and recognised in the Parish and in Barkur, as a group through our yeomen’s service

12] Zonal groups are also allowed to function in the original spirit of CYM and will be affiliated to parent unit in Barkur.

Let, all of us become part of history - as today’s events will be tomorrows history - and great legacy of Barkur, because this will be the first of its kind, an ‘Association of CYM Ex-Members’ in the whole Diocese!!.

To formalise the modalities, and approach the parish priest, the Convenor of the Co-ordination Committee, Mr Lawrence A. Sequeira, invites volunteers, to guide us, and  we will publish developments in due course, in this web-site / or to your address, from time to time.

With best wishes,

On behalf of Ex-ICYM Members Co-ordination Committee and Barkur Website,
