UDUPI DISTRICT FESTIVAL – WELCOME FOCUS ON BARKUR…

During our last visit to Barkur, we got an opportunity to meet District Commissioner of Udupi - Shri S.R.Umashanker; the occasion was the 25th Annual Day Celebrations of ICYM on 18th Dec. 2002, as he was Guest of Honor. We were startled to see the enthusiasm of this  man, to know more about this historical town, his love for history and curiosity to improve Barkur, to be one ‘tourist attraction’ in coming days, really appreciable. We briefed him, of the Barkur.com - its efforts to bring awareness at this direction, as well as, few sources of vital information from the archives of Milagres, SMS College libraries.

District of Udupi, comprising taluks of Karkal and Kundapur in its jurisdiction, completing five years of its formation and to co-memorate the landmark, celebrating weeklong festival starting from 20th to 26th January 2003. Though geographically small but very rich in historical, cultural, religious, educational, commercial, health care, transport and communication etc…. and it has earned a place of respect and reputation in the world map.

Strong presence of educated people, innovative minds with natural serene beauty, one can expect better days ahead to develop it as a tourist heaven!

The stopover at Barkur to the ‘Touring Luxury Coach’ now introduced is just one more beginning, so as the ‘Konkan Railway Station’.

With this perspective, we feel the interest shown by D.C.& others is significant and his / their intense desire to peep into the past, to let the imagination on Barkur, surely take an independent flight. Earlier the past was an neglected character, to a certain extent it is true - when a visitor see barren land at the fort site, the Jain Basadi uncared for, neither a priest nor maintenance of big chunk of almost 365 big and small temples, or the use of historical stone pillars, slabs as posts for a fence, as a short bridge over a water lane, here and there, substantiate this criticism.

The ‘cultural renaissance’ taken place in these days elsewhere in the country, also influenced natives of Barkur, surely bring back the lost glory of ancient town. Few local organizations and in a special way educational institutions have a big role to play, name plates, directions to various sites, welcome arcs, already donated by generous people.

We at Barkur Web-site, feel a full-fledged plan is required, - a spacious Bus stand, net work of good roads, decent restaurants, availability of information at every monument, creating an awareness among citizens of the importance of past etc.  are few issues      need immediate attention.
