Personality of the Month

Rev. Fr. Rohan D’Almeida, SJ – A Visionary Educator from Halekody, Barkur

From the tranquil lanes of Halekody, amidst the lush, fertile fields of historic Barkur, emerges a humble Jesuit priest whose inspiring journey in education and social leadership has become a beacon for countless students, teachers, and communities across Karnataka and beyond. Rev. Fr. Rohan D’Almeida—known affectionately for his simplicity, discipline, and far‑sighted vision—has brought immense pride to his native town through his remarkable achievements and selfless service to humanity.

Recently, Fr. Rohan received the prestigious Bharat Vidya Vibhushan Award, a national honour recognising his exceptional contributions to education, leadership, and community development. This accolade adds yet another glorious chapter to the inspiring life of this son of Barkur, whose mission continues to transform lives through knowledge, values, and compassionate leadership.

Born to the late Simon D’Almeida and Lilly D’Almeida of Halekody Ward, he grew up with elder brother Roshan and younger sister Sumana. Fr. Rohan’s journey reflects dedication, prayer, and perseverance. His educational foundation was laid at Barkur Maryknoll School, followed by enrolment in the Jesuit Seminary, pre‑university studies at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore, and higher education at Bangalore University, Kuvempu University, and the prestigious Jnana Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pune, where he pursued Philosophy and Theology. Well‑qualified with an MA and M.Ed., Fr. Rohan was ordained a priest on 27th December 2009. The memory remains fresh of his celebration of the First Holy Mass on 28th December 2009 in the historic St. Peter’s Church, Barkur.

His contemporaries in Barkur recall that his vocation to priesthood in 1993 is itself inspiring. As a young student, deeply influenced by spiritual mentors in Barkur Church and observing Jesuit missionaries dedicated to education, he courageously responded to God’s call and joined the Society of Jesus. Years later, that young boy from Barkur evolved into one of the most respected Jesuit educators in Karnataka.

Fr. Rohan began his mission as a teacher in renowned Jesuit institutions, including St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore; St. Joseph’s High School, Hassan; and Loyola High School, Bengaluru. His true leadership emerged when he became the founding Principal of Xavier CBSE School, Manvi, and later Loyola CBSE School in Bijapur district. Under his stewardship, institutions flourished academically while nurturing discipline, values, and social responsibility among students.

A gifted administrator and motivator, Fr. Rohan has served as Coordinator of Karnataka Jesuit Secondary Education, guiding as many as 43 Jesuit schools across the state. His active participation in South Asian Jesuit Education Conferences further reflects his commitment to shaping modern education rooted in human values and inclusiveness.

His dedication to underprivileged children, rural education in Raichur, and teacher empowerment has earned him several recognitions over the years. Loyola School, under his leadership, achieved outstanding academic success, including 100% results and government appreciation. He was also honoured for drought‑relief and community service initiatives in North Karnataka. CBSE Chennai recognised him as a Resource Person for promoting 'Happy Classrooms,' highlighting his innovative and student‑friendly educational vision.

Adding another feather to his cap, Fr. Rohan recently assumed charge as Principal of the prestigious St. Aloysius Gonzaga School on 2nd June 2025—one of the leading educational institutions in coastal Karnataka. His appointment has been widely welcomed by educators, alumni, and the Barkur community alike. Those familiar with social media note that most popular websites regularly update news involving this institution, almost every week.

Despite his national recognition and administrative responsibilities, Fr. Rohan remains deeply rooted in humility and service. Those who know him closely describe him as approachable, prayerful, disciplined, and deeply committed to the holistic growth of young people. His life beautifully reflects the Jesuit ideal of forming 'men and women for others.'

For the Almeida clan, especially the people of Halekody and the wider Barkur community, Fr. Rohan D’Almeida is not merely an award‑winning educationist but a living inspiration—a gentle leader who continues to illuminate minds and touch hearts through education, faith, and selfless service.

As Barkur celebrates this distinguished son of the soil, we pray that Almighty God continues to bless Rev. Fr. Rohan D’Almeida, SJ with good health, wisdom, and strength in his noble mission of shaping future generations.
