Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala – Barkur, marked the 79th Independence Day with an atmosphere brimming with pride, enthusiasm, and heartfelt gratitude towards the nation’s freedom fighters. The campus came alive with fluttering tricolours, melodious patriotic songs, and the cheerful spirit of young minds eager to honour India’s glorious past.
The celebrations commenced at 9:00 AM sharp with the ceremonial unfurling of the National Flag by Shri Ivan Suares – a proud alumnus, former Treasurer of SPA, and philanthropist. Escorted by the School SPL, he received the salute and delivered an inspiring address, urging students to cherish the hard-earned freedom and uphold its dignity. He also made a heartfelt appeal to PTA President Mr. Rama Poojary and all parents actively contribute towards promoting admissions for the coming academic year and assured all cooperation from SPA Mumbai.
The occasion was enriched by the presence of several distinguished guests:
Mr. Dolphy D’Souza – Member, School Betterment Committee, who lauded the talents of the students and wished them a bright, promising future.
Mr. Archibald Furtado – Secretary, MHPS Senior Students Association, extended warm Independence Day greetings and shared valuable tips with the younger children on being responsible students in their words, deeds, and behaviour, emphasising that their conduct reflects the goodwill of 'Maryknoll School' in the competitive commercial world.
Mr. Rama Poojary – President, MHPS PTA and former soldier in the Indian Army, who movingly recalled his experiences at the borders and stressed the importance of valuing freedom by remembering the sacrifices of our nation builders.
Mr. Suresh Acharya – Businessman, Donor, Alumni, and owner of Jyothi Jewellers, Brahmmavar, who generously sponsored snacks for all and presented a cheque as financial support to the school.
A colourful cultural programme followed, showcasing patriotic songs, thought-provoking speeches, and lively dance performances by the students, each met with warm applause from the audience.
Earlier, Headmistress Mrs. Joyce Vandan D’Sa extended a heartfelt welcome to all guests, while Ms. Shyamala D’Souza gracefully compered the event and proposed a respectful vote of thanks to the Correspondent (in his absence), the management, alumni, parents, staff, students, and well-wishers for their presence and encouragement.
The celebrations concluded with the distribution of sweets, sponsored by Barkur Panchayat, Mr. Raghu – Vinayaka Electricals, The Mogaveera Yuvaka Sangha, and other well-wishers. The day left everyone with a renewed sense of patriotism and a deep commitment towards nation-building.
