In Loving Memory of Santhosh Fernandes (Hacchu), Nagermutt – Barkur

In Loving Memory of

Santhosh Fernandes (Hacchu), Nagermutt – Barkur

Alas, the breaking of dawn on this fateful day brought with it the most devastating news — the untimely passing of Santhosh Fernandes, fondly known as Hacchu, at just 50 years of age. A wave of shock and disbelief swept through Nagermutt and all of Barkur, for we have lost not just a neighbour, but a vibrant soul who touched countless lives with his warmth, humility, and boundless energy.

Though born in Bombay, Santhosh was truly a son of Barkur — a town that saw him grow from a cheerful schoolboy to a beloved community leader. I remember him vividly as a young lad in Maryknoll School, never the top of the class academically, but the apple of every teacher’s eye. Whether it was helping teachers or caring for younger students, his helping hand and innocent heart were always ready.

From the tender age of five, he made his mark in the Adarsh Youth Association, capturing everyone’s attention with his infectious smile and charming mannerisms. That spark only grew brighter over the years, as he actively involved himself in cultural, social, and religious activities, not just in his ward but throughout the parish.

A true pillar of the ICYM Barkur, Santhosh played a key role as Vice President during its Silver Jubilee in 2001, working tirelessly alongside President Ms. Divya Furtado to make the celebration a resounding success. His dedication, leadership, and humility inspired many young members then — and continue to do so even now.

Santhosh also shone brightly on the stage. Whether in comic timing or character roles, his was a face and voice cherished by audiences in Barkur for over a decade. Roles in plays like Keppo Cyril, Siluchen Philu, Povitr Dolle etc became legendary — not just for the scripts, but because artists like Hacchu breathed life into them with unmatched flair.

Now, as ICYM prepares to celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2026, it grieves the loss of one of its finest torchbearers. His absence leaves a void that words can barely fill — a colourful, compassionate, and charismatic personality taken from us far too soon.

Proud son of late Teresa and Anthony Fernandes and beloved husband of Sharel, decided to settle in Nakhre near Karkal and sadly two of their sons Sanrold and Shon lost their Dad at an early stage. We offer our heartfelt condolences to Santhosh elder brother Steven and Sabita and all in their extended family.

Santhosh, your journey on this earth may have ended, but the memories you gifted us, the laughter you spread, and the kindness you showed — they remain forever etched in our hearts.

May your soul rest in eternal peace.

You lived simply, loved deeply, and served selflessly — and that is how we shall remember you.

Tomorrow Wednesday, 18th June at 4.00 pm his mortal remains will be buried in the Immaculate Heart Church, Nakhre and from home at 3.30 pm.

Adios dear and loving Hachhu, you will always have a special place in our hearts…!!

-P. Archibald Furtado.
