Today, 28th February, as the world celebrates International Science Day, it is indeed most meaningful that we bid a heartfelt farewell to an extraordinary science educator — Mrs. Jyothi Shetty, the dedicated and inspiring Science Teacher of National High School, Barkur, managed by the Barkur Educational Society.
An alumna of her own alma mater, Mrs. Jyothi Shetty represents loyalty, gratitude, and commitment at its finest. Born on 3rd February 1966 to Hiriyanna and Saraswati Shetty of Hanehalli, her journey is both humble and inspiring. Having grown up in the vicinity of the National Campus, she fondly recalls grazing cows as a young girl while gazing at the magnificent educational complex — nurturing a silent dream of one day becoming a teacher within those very walls. That dream, born in simplicity, blossomed into a glorious 36-year career of dedicated service.
She completed her early education at National Higher Primary School, Hanehalli up to Class VII, continued her studies from Class VIII through PU in the Science stream at National Junior College, and pursued her B.Sc. at the prestigious Poorna Prajna College, Udupi. With a clear vision and unwavering determination, she obtained her B.Ed., and even before her results were announced, she courageously accepted a four-month leave vacancy at Perdur High School.
Providence seemed to guide her path. In the academic year 1990, a vacancy arose for a Science Teacher at National High School, Barkur. The bold, intelligent, and qualified Jyothi Shetty stepped in — initially on a temporary basis. Within five years, her sincerity and excellence earned her a permanent position. From then on, there was no looking back — only 36 remarkable years of service to her most beloved alma mater.
Consequently armed with M.Sc. and B.Ed. qualifications, she brought knowledge, discipline, clarity, and passion into every classroom. Affectionately known simply as “Science Teacher” among her students, she had the rare gift of simplifying complex concepts, igniting curiosity, and building confidence. Her meticulous mentoring and tireless efforts consistently ensured 100% SSLC results — a rare and commendable achievement that stands as a testament to her dedication.
But her greatness extends beyond academic excellence. Mrs. Shetty possesses a deeply compassionate heart. She has gone out of her way to support economically poor and deserving students, even accommodating several girl students in her own home free of cost — a noble act that speaks volumes of her generosity and motherly care.
Beyond the classroom, she served diligently as Treasurer of the Old Students’ Association, strengthening alumni bonds with responsibility and transparency. An accomplished and confident emcee, she has gracefully anchored numerous academic and cultural events, known for her command over facts, figures, and flawless presentation. Her teamwork, sincerity, and integrity earned her the respect and admiration of colleagues, management, students, and parents alike.
Her life partner, Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, a passionate educationist and long-serving Headmaster of Matapadi High School, has himself been honoured with District, State, and National Best Teacher Awards for his innovative contributions to practical learning. (At present Secretary of The Barkur Educational Society with Six Institutions under its management).Together, they exemplify an ideal educational family. They are blessed with a loving daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, forming a happy and contented household rooted in values and service.
Mrs. Jyothi Shetty’s contribution to National High School, Barkur will forever remain etched in golden letters in the institution’s history. She is not merely a teacher — she is a mentor, guide, nurturer, and role model to generations of students.
As she steps into a new chapter of her life, we express our profound gratitude for her decades of selfless service. May the Almighty Lord bless her and her family abundantly with good health, happiness, peace, and a fulfilling retired life. May she continue to inspire, guide, and cherish the success of her countless students.
