The day began with a vibrant traditional procession that originated from the parish church and made its way to the residence of Mrs. Rosy Mendonca, where the blessing of the new crop – a centerpiece of this agricultural festival – took place. The blessed grain was then distributed among the faithful, continuing a centuries-old tradition that connects the coastal Karnataka community to its agricultural roots.
The return journey to the church transformed into a spectacular display of faith and joy, with children creating a carpet of flower petals as they showered the procession route. The colorful spectacle drew participants of all ages, reinforcing the festival's role as a unifying community celebration.
Spiritual Leadership and Community Worship
The Holy Mass was concelebrated by Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Ronald Miranda, along with Retired Priest Rev. Fr. Vincent Fernandes and Rev. Fr. Dr. Ivon D'Almeida, bringing together multiple generations of spiritual leadership for this special occasion.
Adding to the solemnity and beauty of the celebration, the Junior Choir, under the expert guidance of Choir Master Eric Soans Barkur, presented melodious hymns that enhanced the spiritual atmosphere of the Mass.
Mrs. Wilma Lewis and Mrs. Saritha and Mr. Desmond Lewis and family were the traditional 'Pirjenths' for the celebration.
Cultural Heritage in Action
Monthi Fest represents far more than a religious observance for the Konkani-speaking Catholic community of coastal Karnataka. The festival serves as a living testament to the region's agricultural heritage, coinciding perfectly with the harvest season to offer thanksgiving for Mother Earth's bounty.
The blessing and distribution of new crops, particularly the first paddy harvest, symbolizes the deep connection between faith and livelihood that has sustained these coastal communities for generations. Traditional delicacies prepared from newly harvested grains, including the beloved 'nove' sweet made from new rice, form an integral part of the celebration.
Community Unity and Tradition
Following the Mass, parishioners gathered in the traditional spirit of community fellowship, exchanging greetings and sharing in the joy of the harvest celebration. This post-service gathering exemplifies how Monthi Fest transcends religious boundaries to become a celebration of cultural preservation, community bonding, and shared heritage.
The successful celebration at Barkur Parish demonstrates how this ancient festival continues to serve as a unifying force, bringing together multiple generations while preserving the rich traditions that define the cultural identity of coastal Karnataka's Catholic community.
As the harvest season begins across the region, the Monthi Fest celebration at Barkur stands as a beautiful reminder of the enduring connection between faith, community, and the agricultural cycles that have shaped life along Karnataka's coast for centuries.
