The historic National High School, founded in 1946 during the pre-Independence era, and now part of a sprawling 18.5-acre green campus nurturing students from KG to PG, witnessed a grand and emotionally charged 79th Independence Day celebration.
In a heart-warming display of unity, the three institutions on the campus – National Higher Primary School, National High School, and National PU College – came together to salute the National Tricolour.
The flag hoisting was performed at 10:00 AM by Shri Shedikodlu Vittal Shetty, Vice President of The Barkur Educational Society – an octogenarian who had personally witnessed India’s Independence in 1947 as a young primary school student. Visibly moved, he delivered an inspiring and thought-provoking address on “What freedom means, and why it is sacred and supreme”. With deep emotion, he urged the younger generation – the future of the nation – to work hard, remain honest, and uphold patriotism to help India rise as a world leader in the years to come.
The celebrations featured a grand parade by NCC cadets, Scouts, Guides, and other student contingents in immaculate uniforms, adding colour and splendour to the morning.
After the school prayer, Mrs. Usha Kiran Shetty, Principal (PU Section), extended a warm welcome to all guests and participants. Mrs. Hemavathy P.S., Headmistress (Primary Section), delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, while Mr. Udaya Shetty, Headmaster (High School Section), along with his colleagues from PU, High School, and Primary School, meticulously oversaw all arrangements to ensure the day’s smooth success.
The event was graced by eminent personalities including Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, Secretary – BES, Mr. Gopala Naik, Correspondent – NPU & High School, and Mr. Archibald Furtado, Admin Coordinator – National Group of Educational Institutions, Barkur. Teachers, parents, alumni, and well-wishers attended in large numbers, filling the campus with joy and pride.
The cultural programme – comprising colourful patriotic tableaus, stirring skits and speeches, soulful songs, and lively dances – kept the audience engaged till 1:00 PM. The day concluded on a sweet note with the distribution of sweets, snacks, and payasam to all, leaving behind memories of a truly beautiful and patriotic celebration.
