"Life is but a journey, with its turns and twists – even the strongest among us sometimes bow before the weight of destiny."
-Prof. P. Archibald Furtado
Christopher Fernandes, once a vibrant youth leader of the erstwhile CYM, Barkur, in the 1980s, served with passion and responsibility, rising to the position of President in 1985–86. He was a guiding light for many young men and women of his time.
Born as the youngest son in a large family of devout late Severine and Anthony Fernandes - 5 sons Patrick, Melwyn, Dalton, Crammer and 3 daughters - late Cynthia DSouza, Sharmila Lewis and Shalini DSouza - in Hosala, Barkur, Christopher had his early education at Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala, completing Grade VII, and later pursued his High School and PU studies at National Junior College, Barkur.
His quest for knowledge and skill led him to technical education, after which he served in Mumbai. Life then offered him a golden opportunity to work in the UAE, where, through his expertise and commitment as an operator, he earned a name of repute and dignity.
"Behind every successful man, there is a strong family." Christopher found his lifelong companion in Mrs. Meera Quadros, a native of Bennekudru, one dedicated government teacher, in Kavadi High School.Together, they built a beautiful family and were blessed with two loving daughters, Candida married to Stephen Rodrigues and Chrystal now well-settled in Germany and the UAE, respectively.
Though a man of few words, Christopher was known as a no-nonsense, disciplined family man, who valued home, harmony, and a close circle of true friends. His simple lifestyle and gentle ways left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
In the later years of his life, Christopher moved away from his native Barkur and built a beautiful house at Chantar, Brahmmavar Parish, where he lived peacefully with his beloved family.
"Good men must die, but death cannot kill their names." Christopher’s life is a testimony to hard work, quiet strength, and devotion to his loved ones. He will be remembered not only as a leader of his youth but also as a noble son, a caring husband, a devoted father, and a true friend, as we bid final adeus to him while his mortal remains will be burried in Brahmmavar Holy Family Church cemetery on Saturday 23rd August 2025, after the Holy Mass at 4.30 pm.
As the CYM Barkur gearing up for its Golden Jubilee in 2026, Alas we lost one more stalwart in Christopher...!!
May his soul rest in eternal peace. 🌹
